The Road to College

Today’s universities seek students who think critically and creatively, communicate effectively in writing and speech, and have been prepared to handle the intellectual demands of college. They are students who have a passion for learning and contributing to their communities. Through rigorous classes, abundant service opportunities, and solid extracurricular activities, Bradford prepares students for college throughout their entire high school career.

Bradford students meet with a college advisor to make certain they are reaching their full potential in their academic coursework and extracurricular experiences. Utilizing a premier career and college readiness program, students identify their unique interests, discover compatible careers, and follow a plan to help them reach their personal goals.

Students interested in highly selective colleges are given the opportunity to take a wide range of rigorous honors and Advanced Placement courses. Bradford is proud to be a member school of the AP Capstone Diploma program. AP Capstone requires two unique AP courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, which prepare students for college academic research and analysis.

While more and more colleges and universities are going test-optional (where students may or may not submit standardized test scores) or even test-blind (where standardized test scores are not accepted), Bradford still prepares students for the SAT or ACT exams in case they would benefit from completing that part of the college application. The overall rigor of Bradford’s curriculum and a semester-long SAT preparation class help students achieve scores that will benefit them in the college admission process.

By the end of junior year, a college advisor assists Bradford students in identifying colleges that meet the student’s interests and fit their academic and extracurricular record. In this process, students and their families learn what many different kinds of colleges have to offer.

Bradford seniors begin the application process and make checklists of what is necessary for them to complete. With help from the college advisor and Upper School principal, students create college portfolios that organize application deadlines, necessary forms, scholarship information, letters of recommendation, transcripts, personal essays, and, if applicable, standardized testing. If desired, students are coached on proper interview techniques, attire, and etiquette. Bradford also hosts college preparation workshops for families, bringing in guest speakers to instruct on issues such as college financing strategies and scholarship options.
